Biofilm forming ability of clinical isolates ofStaphylococci and screening for Anti-biofilm efficacy in Agro-waste extracts.Description :
Staphylococci are ubiquitous, gram positive cocci responsible for many chronic nosocomial infections. These organisms are of great concern in healthcare as they possess the ability to form biofilm which play a significant role in bacterial persistence and antibiotic resistance. EPS (Exopolysaccharide) has known to be associated with biofilm formation by promoting mechanical stability facilitating bacterial adherence. In our study, EPS for 3 good biofilm producers was extracted and estimated for carbohydrate and protein. Many investigations have been documented suggesting anti-biofilm property in many plant extracts. The objective of this study was to screen clinical isolates of Staphylococci for biofilm formation and testing agro-waste extracts [lemon peel (Citrus limon), mango leaves (Mangifera indica), orange peel (Citrus reticulata), pomegranate shell (Punica granatum) and strawberry leaves (Fragaria ananassa)] for their anti-biofilm property. Quantitative estimation by TCP method allowed 7 out of 9 isolates to form moderate biofilm. These isolates were tested in combination with agro-waste extracts which resulted in a decline in biofilm formation quantitatively. All the test extracts showed anti-biofilm property. The results for lemon peel extract amongst all others were best. Thus it could be concluded that natural plant extracts could prove effective as a substitute for antibiotic therapy.Laboratory Skills :
